Many students only dream of getting a perfect score on their math SAT; however, this was a reality for Peter Nguyen. Math is just one of Peter’s many talents. Some of his other talents include snowboarding, lacrosse, and video games. Peter likes to keep active and is very involved. He is currently a member of the VSA (Vietnamese Student Association) and the snowboarding club.
Peter Nguyen resembles the typical teenager. He has brown eyes with dark hair. Peter likes to dress casually, usually wearing flip flops.
Peter grew up in the suburban city of Chantilly, Virginia. According to Peter it is filled with many things to do and places to hangout. You can often find him at the mall, the movie theater, or at one of its multiple restaurants. “It is a safe place without a lot of crime,” he said. He only recalls one incident of a crime in his whole time living there, which was the death of a police officer.
Peter lives with his mother, father, and sister. He has a great relationship with his family, and they are all very close. He described his upbringing as being strict but not unreasonable. Peter’s parents expected him to make exceptional grades; however, he said that he did not make the grades that they had wanted him to. Despite all of the rules and expectations they had, Peter said he has nothing but admiration and respect for his parents.
According to his father, he had a very close relationship with Peter as a child, but as Peter grew older their relationship grew more and more apart. His father reasoned this to his son’s increasing independence, which began to put stress on their relationship. His father compared their new relationship to that of one resembling two adults. He said that their father-son relationship can improve if he and Peter could talk more often. He also stated that he was very proud of his son’s desire to exceed in school.
Peter attended Thomas Jefferson High School near Washington D.C. However, this was not an ordinary high school. At Thomas Jefferson you are required to take a test and receive a certain score just to be accepted. The school primarily focuses on science and technology. According to his best friend, this is where Peter caught up on most of his sleep.
When Peter was asked who he usually hangs out with he simply replied, “mostly Asian people.” Some of his close friends at Virginia Tech include his roommate and a few friends from high school. He said that he has just started to meet new people and hopes to make many new friends.
You could say Peter Nguyen is the typical college freshmen. He spends most of his time in his dorm room. While in his room you can often find him playing video games, hanging out with friends, or watching television shows. Another an interesting fact about Peter, that one probably would not expect, is that he is exceptionally good at computer games. He is one of the best players in the world at a game called “Dota.” His intelligence is what gives him the upper hand in all strategy games.
Peter’s talents are not limited to just gaming. He likes to spend a lot of his time outdoors. Some of his favorite activities include lacrosse and snowboarding. He also is a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Peter enjoys playing team sports and currently plays on a lacrosse team. He has only been snowboarding a hand full of times, but one of his goals for the future is to become a better snowboarder.
Someone that participates in all of these activities and benefits from such a great upbringing is guaranteed to be a well rounded person with a wonderful personality. If you ask any of his friends what kind of person Peter is they will all agree he is genuinely a good guy and a great friend to have. He is very outgoing and talkative around his friends, however, he keeps to himself in class and around people he is not familiar with.
Peter is also very serious about his education. For example, he took summer classes in high school so he could get ahead. Peter was lucky and high school work came easy to him. He said that he spent most of his time in class sleeping. Surprisingly, sometimes peer pressure got the best of him. Occasionally Peter would skip classes and sneak out during the school day.
On one of these outings while skipping class, Peter and his friends formed a group called the “DCEC” which would lead to many exciting adventures during their senior year. “DCEC” stands for D.C. Eating Club, and that’s exactly what they did, eat. Peter and his friends would skip school and drive to their favorite restaurant. At this restaurant they would all order philly cheese steaks because that was what the restaurant was famous for. After socializing, the club would drive back to school just in time for the bell to ring.
Peter Nguyen has many plans for his future. He hopes to graduate from Virginia Tech with a major in Engineering. He also looks forward to having a successful career in engineering. Eventually he wants to settle down and have a wife and children.
It is easy to draw the conclusion that life is looking pretty promising for Peter Nguyen. He has been able to achieve anything he puts his mind to and this will continue for anything he desires in life. If he continues at this rate, receiving a perfect score on his math SAT will be a small accomplishment for what is in store for his future.
